Solvent VOC Emissions stabilise according to Study

ESIG publishes  Solvent VOC Emission Inventories

The European Solvents Industry Group (ESIG), a sector group of Cefic (Brussels, Belgium) has recently published a Technical Position Paper titled “Solvent VOC Emissions Inventories 2008-2015” with “the aim … to provide a method to establish volatile organic VOC solvent emissions and assist Member States improve the quality of their reported VOC solvent emissions in the European Union.”

For  the underlying study, ESIG Members have submitted their volumes of both Hydrocarbon and Oxygenated Solvents produced, for each of the EU-27 countries for the years 2008, 2009 and 2013. In 2015, these data included Croatia to make the EU-28. Using industry expertise within ESIG, solvent VOC emissions have been calculated for all the EU-27 Member States for 2008, 2009, and 2013, with all 28 Member States included in 2015.

Based on the aggregation of true sales data, “Solvent VOC Emissions have stabilized in the EU28 since 2008 at just under 2’000 ktonnes, with Member States total estimates at some 30% or more above the ESIG estimates”, ESIG said in a statement. The association also makes suggestions for further research and analysis to clarify the root cause of the discrepancies in the two types of estimates.
